nicer than sunshine and lollipops… my silhouette cameo

sunshine and lollipops

I’m so very excited about my Christmas present this year. My hubby went away for six weeks to America and it was miserable without him, but to get me through I did a lot of online shopping and had him bring me home a suitcase full of things! Mostly presents for the kids, but for me this awesome new machine called a Silhouette Cameo. It’s similar to a printer in that it plugs into
your computer, but it doesn’t print, it cuts. I have always loved paper art and admired the talents and immeasurable patience of those that create these designs by hand. I don’t posses that kind of patience or skill with a scalpel, so this is my fabulous solution.

cameo project

I have had a little play with it and I am so happy with my first project. I created the design in Adobe Illustrator and cut it from a piece of white card. I love it! I know what I’ll be spending all my spare waking hours doing… sketching new ideas to make with my Cameo.

Hi there, I love what you’re doing, stumbled upon your page while looking for things that a Cameo can do. One thing kept me from deciding on buying one was that I don’t live in the States and the voltage we have is different from that in the US. I understood from your post that you live elsewhere as well. What did you do about the voltage? Is it the same where you live as the US, or does the machine cover the 120-240 V range?

Thanks, and did I mention I love what you’re doing :)

Thanks for commenting on my blog! I’m in Australia and we have different voltage to the States but still in the range of the Cameos power transformer thing which is 100-240V. I just had to go to the hardware store and buy a kettle plug which fit the machine and plugs into our Australian sockets. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for the reply, I’m definitely going to look into buying one now. Keep up the good work.

Hi! So excited i just ordered my Cameo, i was curious about how you used Illustrator. Everywhere I have read has said you use the program it comes with but would prefer to use Illustrator. Thanks! Jenn

Hi Jenn, I’m so excited for you! Looking forward to seeing what you will make with your Cameo. You can cut any .svg file, you just need to purchase the designer add-on software. It took me a while to figure it out but the best way get it is; once you’ve installed it from the CD that comes with the machine, open the silhouette software on your computer and through there you can go to the online store and purchase the designer edition. It’s $50 but then you can do your designs in illustrator and save them as .svg and cut them with the cameo. I’ve found the online help is a bit limited and the best place to read forums on it is flickr groups. All the best! X sim

  7. oh my <3 love it!!! did you save the file and could you provide it for purchase? looove it!

  12. Vanessa

where can i purchase this design?

    • littlepieceofpie

Thank-you for you interest in the design. Would you like it as an .svg file to cut yourself or as a papercut?

  13. Vanessa

i wannna cut it with my silhouette! i dont have the designer edition :(

  14. I am sooooo jealous!!!! I’ve been wanting one of these for a couple of years, but am retired and can’t afford it. My dd & I had a talk several years ago about the Cricuit & I told her about the Silhouette & that there weren’t expensive cartridges to buy (which I can’t afford). She, apparently didn’t remember all of our conversation because she sent me a Cricuit Expression 2 for Christmas last year! I know I should be more grateful, but since I can’t buy the cartridges, the machine is useless to me. So, enjoy your Cameo for me too!lol Love what you’ve done with this card!

  15. Oh I’m so jealous. I love Photoshop, and to pretty well with it, but Illustrator drives me nuts. Such a great piece of work.

It’s a pain to learn but once you get the hang of it you can have some good fun. Though this one did take the best part of about six hours to create!
